President Donald Trump promised to take a bold stance on immigration after the last eight years of nearly open borders and handouts to anyone who made it into the country, and it’s already having an effect.
Breitbart News is reporting that immigrants who have been mooching off of our welfare system realized that with the new president they’re going to have to figure out how to become self-reliant rather than take handouts from taxpayers. Since Trump’s election victory, they’ve been removing themselves from welfare rolls amid fears they’ll either be denied citizenship or deported for not being a productive member of our society.
More from Breitbart:
Advocates on behalf of these immigrants say that their fear stems from the possibility that Immigration and Customs Enforcement would notice their participation in the food stamp program and deny them U.S. citizenship or deport them.
These immigrants are now going to food pantries and soup kitchens so that they can feed themselves and their families.
“They’re making these decisions based on what they hear in the news or information they’re getting from other people,” Miguelina Diaz, food support connections program manager for Hunger Free America, said. “People started asking questions right after Trump took office.”
Diaz said she recently helped two legal resident families from Queens remove themselves from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). One of the women, a mother of two, asked for help erasing her name from a local food pantry, as well.
Spanish-language SNAP applications to the Maryland Food Bank have fallen from 20 a month to zero, the Post reports.
There’s currently no penalty for eligible immigrants who receive government benefits. However, President Trump drafted an executive order in January that would seek to deport or deny citizenship to those taking taxpayer handouts.
As Robert Rector from the Heritage Foundation noted, it shouldn’t be up to the American people to support those wanting to come to America.
“I don’t think it’s proper to increase the burden on U.S. taxpayers for people whose only claim to them is that they broke our law,” said Rector, a senior research fellow for the organization. “These children receive a large amount of benefits because their parents came here illegally.”
Indeed. If you want to come to America, it’s not too much to ask that you at least support yourself.
After all, we already have skyrocketing debt and millions of our own in poverty, so the last thing we need to do is import even more people to live off of the government and continue bleeding taxpayers dry.
