In January, one of the members of the peaceful standoff between a group of Oregon ranchers and federal agents, LaVoy Finicum, was ambushed then killed by authorities on his way to a town meeting, and people were left with numerous questions about the tactics used. Well, some of those questions may end up being answered after the bad news that several FBI agents just received.
For those unaware, Finicum was the de-facto leader of the group of patriots standing up to the Bureau of Land Management’s overreach in the Midwest, which has led to the federal government’s seizure of millions of acres of land used for farming. To make a point, the group took over a shack on the Malheur Wildlife Refuge, and a weeks-long standoff ensued.
The standoff took a massive blow when Finicum was traveling to a town meeting roughly 40 miles away from the refuge. He and a truckload of other protesters were chased down by authorities, and after he emerged from the vehicle with his hands in the air, agents shot him dead from behind. Many people were skeptical of the tactics used, and the FBI was accused of assassinating Finicum by people suspicious of the entire situation.
Well, those calling for justice for Finicum were just given a ray of hope from the Department of Justice, who launched an investigation into the shooting. Apparently, five FBI agents involved with Finicum’s death are now being probed after it was revealed they covered up details of the incident.
The Daily Caller has more on the bombshell investigation:
One of the FBI agents allegedly lied about firing twice on Finicum, who was shot to death in the course of an attempted arrest related to the militia’s occupation of federal land. Four other agents allegedly helped that agent cover up the lie, reported the Oregonian.
Authorities revealed the investigation Tuesday, as a team of local investigators released new details about the shooting. A member of the Hostage Rescue Team allegedly failed to report the two shots in question, officials said, although neither bullet actually hit Finicum.
Investigators did not specify exactly why the other four unnamed agents are under investigation, except to say it’s related to alleged misconduct after the shooting. DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz is heading up the investigation.
“The question of who fired these shots has not been resolved,” Greg Bretzing, special agent in charge of the FBI in Portland, said at a news conference, according to the Oregonian.
Newly released details in the case reveal that two state policemen shot Finicum three times in the back, and one of the shots went through his heart. However, video of the incident shows an unmarked agent emerge from the woods and apparently shooting Finicum in the face, which was likely the fatal shot.
Malheur County District Attorney Dan Norris cleared the Oregon State Police of any wrongdoing in relation to the killing. According to Norris, the six shots fired, three of which were into the truck and the other three at Finicum, were “justified” and “necessary” by the officers.
This entire incident has reeked from the start, and after learning agents covered up details about it, people are bound to go into conspiracy overdrive, especially with the rumors that a gun was planted on Finicum. Knowing what we know now, how can people not question the entire story?
Oh, and here’s the newest video out, which shows the arial view alongside video from inside of the truck. Have a look at it and you decide for yourself whether or not Finicum was murdered (Shooting starts at around the 6:00 mark, but you’ll want to hear what they said before):
