Vice President Mike Pence visited Brussels on Monday, and people noticed something extremely strange about the American flag hung in the background to honor his visit.
The Star-Spangled Banner was indeed a little more starry as it was displayed alongside the European Union flag while Pence and E.U. leader Donald Tusk spoke Monday afternoon. It didn’t take long for people to notice that the iconic symbol of freedom had a total of 51 stars instead of the usual 50, causing many to wonder if it was an intentional dig at the U.K. over its Brexit vote.
The flag featured three rows of nine stars and another three rows of eight stars, whereas they’re supposed to feature nine alternating rows of five or six stars.
When asked about the flub, which seemingly had to be intentional, the E.U. declined to comment.
However, Internet users had plenty to say about mishap on the Daily Mail’s website:
“Has Britain become the 51st State?” one user pondered.
“Hmm…, who counted the stars? Could this be a subtle dig at the UK for Brexit?” asked another.
“The fifty-first is earmarked for the UK when it’s finally absorbed into its former colony,” someone noted.
Others used the opportunity to take not-so-subtle digs at the former president.
“Hah the EU couldn’t even get that right. Then again it was Obama who thought the USA had 57 states……..”
“According to Obama there should be 57…”
You get the idea. But while media coverage of the incident has been relatively tame, just imagine if it were Trump’s people responsible for such a mishap.
It would be headline news for at least a week as conspiracy theories swirled over whether or not he was planning on annexing Russia, the left’s favorite new boogie man.
