There’s little question over whether or not Barack Obama and his family like to vacation on the taxpayers’ dime, but how much it costs has been rather secretive, which is why a watchdog group just filed a lawsuit against the First Family to shed light on the issue.
Since first taking office, the Obamas have gone on more than 38 all-expenses paid trips around the country – and the globe – and that was after he promised as a candidate to swear off leisure time entirely. Apparently, like many other promises, it was one he didn’t intend on keeping, and it’s cost We the People quite a bit of money.
Being good citizens of the country, conservative watchdog Judicial Watch filed a lawsuit against the Department of Homeland Security, who oversees the Secret Service, after the bureau repeatedly ignored Freedom of Information Act requests, a press release from the group stated.
According to BizPac Review, Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton charges that the taxpayers are being “abused” by Obama’s “kingly entourage,” and he contends that King Barry’s travel expenses are far north of $74 million. In fact, Judicial Watch tallied just two vacations, and they alone totaled over $5 million.
“Now that we’ve sued, the Secret Service has stopped ignoring our requests for details on more of the costs of Barack Obama’s luxury vacations,” Fitton said in the statement. “Taxpayers, the U.S. Air Force, and the Secret Service are being abused by Barack Obama, who too often treats Air Force One and his security detail like some sort of kingly entourage.”
According to Judicial Watch, two Obama family vacations alone cost over $5 million dollars.
Numbers obtained from Homeland Security’s subsequent response to FOIA requests revealed that the August 2014 Martha’s Vineyard and Christmas 2014 Honolulu vacations cost taxpayers $1,243,057.80 for Secret Service accommodations alone.
A 17-day Martha’s Vineyard vacation in 2015 included a stay at a “humble” $22.5 million home complete with six bedrooms, five bathrooms, an over-sized fireplace and a heated infinity pool. The spread fit for a king is seen here:
In addition to the costs outlined about, Judicial Watch said that $39,575.95 was spent at Paradise Luxury Rentals, another $34,827.57 at the Kahala, and a whopping $298,215.15 at Cabana Girl LLC. Do you feel like a peasant yet? Oh, we also mustn’t forget the additional overtime costs for the Honolulu Police Department to provide security to Barry and the fam, which totaled the utterly insane amount of $341,000.
Keep in mind that these costs are just for when Obama and his family travel, and they don’t include his golf outings, which happen several times a week. In fact, as of August 2015, Obama had played some 248 rounds of golf at an average of six hours per round. So just think about what the costs of protection for that are.
While many on the left loved to mention George W. Bush and how much he vacationed, what they failed to mention is that the vast majority of Bush’s “vacations” were at his Texas estate, which meant the impact on taxpayers was very little. It’s not about how many vacations were taken, but how much is being spent on them, and in that department, there’s little question that Obama holds the record.
Over three-quarters of the country is living paycheck-to-paycheck, insurance plans are either being canceled or premiums are skyrocketing because of Obamacare, and the labor force participation rate is nearly at a record low. Why does any of that matter?
While the rest of us trim our budgets to just barely squeak by, these people are living like royalty off of our hard-earned money. Absolutely disgusting.
