Things became heated right out of the gate during the GOP debates on Fox News Thursday night, and presidential hopeful Donald Trump didn’t waste any time going after a moderator in true Trump fashion following a rather interesting question.
Moderator Megyn Kelly questioned Trump about disparaging comments he had made about women in the past, and it didn’t take long for things to become intense.
“You’ve called women you don’t like ‘fat pigs,’ ‘dogs,’ ‘slobs,’ and ‘disgusting animals,’” Kelly said.
“Only Rosie O’Donnell,” quipped Trump, who was greeting with laughter from the audience.
Trump used the opportunity to lament that the U.S. has an issue with political correctness, and that we need to stop worrying so much about it so we can focus on bigger issues.
“I don’t have time for total political correctness. And to be honest with you, this country doesn’t have time either. This country is in big trouble,” he added. “What I say is what I say. And honestly Megyn, if you don’t like it, I’m sorry.”
From there, Trump took a shot at Kelly, likely in retaliation for the loaded question she had asked him.
“I’ve been very nice to you, although I could probably maybe not be based on the way you have treated me, but I wouldn’t do that,” he said.
While this was early on in the debate, the rest of the night would almost cement Trump’s assertion as the moderators kept delivering hard questions to him and not backing down. In fact, many people today have said that they’re highly disappointed in how the debates were run by Fox, and are accusing the network of trying to destroy the candidates it doesn’t support.
Whether or not last night hurt Trump remains to be seen, but I know this much – nearly every poll had him winning the debate overall, so I don’t think Fox’s attempt to destroy him was too successful.
