Back in March, GOP front-runner Donald Trump won the Arizona primary with 47 percent of the popular vote, which should have given him the majority of the state’s delegates. However, the Arizona GOP held its convention yesterday, and the shocking outcome has Trump’s supporters crying foul.

According to Real Clear Politics, Trump amassed 47 percent of the vote, with Sen. Ted Cruz coming in second with 24.9 percent and Gov. John Kasich in third with 10 percent. As the vote stood, Trump should have received 58 of the available delegates from the state, but that’s not what happened… at all.

In fact, the outcome in the state was so shocking to Trump’s supporters that even Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Trump supporter herself, said that she was “cheated.”

Here’s what happened, according to KTAR:

Texas Sen. Ted Cruz pulled out a strategic victory at Saturday’s Arizona Republican Party convention, nailing down a large majority of delegates to the national convention amid cheating accusations from backers of businessman Donald Trump.

The Cruz slate won virtually all of the 28 at-large national delegates and roughly split the 27 delegates selected by congressional district.

Former Gov. Jan Brewer, losing her first election in 35 years, angrily yelled “I got cheated — I got cheated,” as the results became known.

Isn’t that something? Apparently, the “non-existent” alliance between Cruz and Kasich is still very much alive as the two candidates combined slates to deny Trump the majority of the state’s delegates.

In an attempt to explain away the disenfranchisement of Arizona’s voters, Cruz’s Arizona campaign chair, Constanin Querard tried to say the number of people who voted against Trump was greater than those who voted for him.

“They lost because of math, not because of malfeasance,” he said. “If you take the people that want Cruz, and you add to them the people who don’t want Trump, that’s a majority in just about any room in America.”

However, looking at the vote tallies for the state, his statement is blatantly false.

Cruz’s supporters would call what happened a “good ground game,” but the reality is that he and the GOP elites effectively silenced the voices of Republican voters in Arizona. Think about it; if Cruz’s “ground game” is indeed that good, then where was it in the last six elections, where he was absolutely slaughtered by Trump and didn’t even place second in the majority of them?

It comes down to this; when the people vote, Trump wins. When party apparatchiks gather at conventions and strike shady deals without the people’s knowledge, Cruz wins.

It’s this exact type of political gamesmanship that’s paved the way for the massive support Trump has received, and judging by what’s happened in the past, this move is only going to embolden his supporters in the coming elections. After all, every time Cruz has pulled something shady, Trump supporters have come out en masse to ensure he’s defeated.

So while Cruz may have “won” the majority of Arizona’s delegates, all he’s really done is help to ensure Trump gets the magic 1,287 number on the first ballot, which would instantly render Cruz’s “good ground game” worthless.
